DELIS-CompNet

Workshop on

Theoretical Aspects and Models of

Large, Complex and Open Information Networks

October 18-20, 2006

Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya

Organized within the framework of EU DELIS project and supported by

Yahoo! Research Barcelona, Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya and Computer Technology Institute (Patras).

    Scope:

Large, Complex and Open Information Networks consist of many interacting nodes, possess properties like freedom from scale, small diameter and large clustering coefficient and besides being dynamically evolving, they grow in an open and in many respects anarchic way.

Perhaps the most challenging such networks are the webgraph and the Internet.

Understanding how self-organization is realized and how local decisions concerning connectivity among nodes affect the global emergent properties of such networks, like percolation, clustering, critical exponents etc.,  is a challenging research issue that has attracted considerable attention

Several graph-theoretic models, especially random ones, have been used to model such networks (among them: the classical Erdos-Renyi model, the regular lattice, the Watts-Strogatz and the Barabasi models and others). These fit up to a point their real world networks-targets, but obviously more concepts have to be considered for a better understanding.

The scope of this workshop is to foster interaction among researchers of this area and encourage interdisciplinary approaches (for example, from the point of view of complex systems, computer science, statistical mechanics, discrete mathematics, biology and others).

    Venue:

Delis-CompNet will take place in the North Campus of the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya. The lectures scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday will take place in the lecture hall of the Vertex Building (Sala d'actes de l'edifici Vertex) (to get there see the map). The lectures which are scheduled for Friday will take place in the lake room of the rectorate building (Sala del Llac) (to get there see the map).
